Margaret Wheatley is Making My Life Miserable!

Margaret Wheatley has made my life miserable and joyous all at the same time! Over the past couple of years I have read two of her books. Both have disturbed, convicted, and liberated me. They are disturbing because they challenged the way I have viewed organizations and leadership for the past twenty years; convicting because I wonder about some of the advice I have given my clients; and liberating in the fact that I now have some level of confirmation that my natural inclinations about leadership and organizational dynamics were on track. Leadership and Management

These two terms get thrown around as though they are interchangeable and even though the two have some overlaps there are distinctions we should make when focusing on either. Grace Murray Hopper put the difference in very simple yet succinct terms “you manage things and you lead people.” Although this may over simplify the places in which leadership and management merge it does draw an important distinction. Leadership is fundamentally about moving people in a common direction that is in the long-term best interest of the people. Social Media: Hear, Speak, See No Evil

We are all familiar with the maxim of avoidance that warns us to “Hear no evil, speak no evil, and see no evil.” Even though its origins are in 8th century Asia their meaning has passed on from generation to generation, and sure enough is still as popular as ever in our digital age. I continue to run into the Three Wise Monkeys “philosophy” when it comes to organizational strategies on social media.
